Section 3: Supplemental (Non-Vacancy Specific) Recruitment Activities Undertaken by Employment Unit
Covering Period March 11, 2003 - May 31, 2003
Stations Comprising Station Employment Unit: WFXD, WKQS, WHCH, WQXO
Great Lakes Radio, Inc. undertook to ensure that all management and those with influence in advancement and the employment process started in our long-term program to educate management to properly recruit new hires and how to outreach to our community to encourage a wide cross-section of all community members to consider employment in our station in particular and the broadcast industry in general. Assignment of a new EEO oversight rules and training regarding of people involved in the employment process was pursued.
Our Internet and internal Intranet network sites were updated to reflect this dedication and to facilitate wider dispersal of information and easier data-basing of all information regarding the EEO public file and employment positions available in our Station Employment Unit. The entire staff was informed of the enhanced tools available and the proper process of wide dissemination.
Plans to encourage our traditional outreach to widen and to use our broadcast facilities to inform community organizations of these opportunities were put into place to emphasis the exciting career paths available in broadcast and those giving tours of our facilities were given specific instructions to organize and document future tours with an eye toward general outreach to the community.
Two station personnel with employment influence were sent to the Michigan Association of Broadcaster Equal Employment Opportunity Seminar to not only become educated on the new EEO outreach process but also to help management develop long-term outreach efforts, under the supervision of the General Manger. Plans to become involved in Fall Job Fairs, Employment Outreach at Michigan Works, and other means to outreach were developed. In addition mini-seminars for internal employees were developed and planned for the following year, including one that happened near the end of the covered period that was presented to both sales and on-air staff. The last mini-seminar alone, done just after the covered period ended, but developed during the covered period, involved 15 man-hours in just one day.
The process of exploring new ways to disseminate job opportunities was explored, including beginning the contact process with the local community groups. Data-basing of our employment dissemination contacts was completed and a plan to expand our outreach was solidified for the following twelve months.
Network and Station Employment Policy statements were updated to indicate the following position of Great Lakes Radio, Inc. and this policy was read, in its entirety to all on-air, management, and sales staff:
Great Lakes Radio, Inc. and all its associated stations in the Station Employment Unit is dedicated to affording equal opportunity to all qualified persons and that no person shall be discriminated against in employment on the basis of race, color, religion, nation origin, or sex. There are specific new outreach activities and record keeping required showing compliance, and every person at Great Lakes Radio, Inc. is affected. Everyone from the janitor to the cake decorator, when classified under the rule as an employee, must be part of the process that insures employment opportunities are disseminated in the widest possible manner, though multiple mediums, throughout our community.
While we have little labor turn-over and no turnover in the covered period, plans were explored and authorized by management to ensure full compliance with both the letter and spirit of the new Equal Employment Opportunity Rules. The main emphasis at this time is to continue to expand our employment contact list and develop contacts and hopefully successful coordination with local community organizations to ensure successful future wide dissemination of both specific job opportunities at Great Lakes Radio, Inc. but also to encourage the widest possible numbers of people to explore employment opportunities in the broadcast industry in general. The following is a good example in that spirit:
