Section 3: Supplemental (Non-Vacancy Specific) Recruitment Activities Undertaken by Employment Unit

Covering Period June 1, 2010 – May 31, 2011
Stations Comprising Station Employment Unit: WFXD,  WKQS,  WRUP,  WQXO.
Great Lakes Radio again participated in local job fair at Northern Michigan University. We increased our efforts to use local publications to advertise both full-time and part-time positions.  We provided opportunities for student tours from local school children, senior citizen groups, through our facilities and even had a day where student spent time shadowing our staff to help them develop a report on a career in broadcasting.  We, of course, continued to encourage those with job openings and those that would like to be notified of job openings at our stations to submit them to our General Business Manager.
Network and Station Employment Policy statements were re-enforced to all current employees and introduced to all new employees to indicate the following position of Great Lakes Radio, Inc.:
Great Lakes Radio, Inc. and all its associated stations in the Station Employment Unit is dedicated to affording equal opportunity to all qualified persons and that no person shall be discriminated against in employment on the basis of race, color, religion, nation origin, or sex.  There are specific new outreach activities and record keeping required showing compliance, and every person at Great Lakes Radio, Inc. is affected.   Everyone from the janitor to the cake decorator, when classified under the rule as an employee, must be part of the process that insures employment opportunities are disseminated in the widest possible manner, though multiple mediums, throughout our community.
Every effort has been taken by management, including many man-hours of time expended, to ensure full compliance with both the letter and spirit of the Equal Employment Opportunity Rules.   We also intend to participate in the Summer Job Fairs at the local University this summer and continue to expand our employment contact list to improve our coordination with local community organizations to ensure successful future wide dissemination of specific job opportunities at Great Lakes Radio, Inc. and  to encourage the widest possible numbers of people to explore employment opportunities in the broadcast industry in general.  The following is a good example in that spirit:
Great Lakes Radio Stations WFXD 103.3, WKQS 101.9, WRUP 98.3, are looking for organizations that regularly distribute information about employment opportunities to job applicants or have job applicants to refer.  If your organization would like to receive notification of job vacancies at our stations, please notify:
Employment C/O Great Lakes Radio, Inc.  3060 U.S. 41 West Marquette, MI 49855.  Email our stations at employment@broadcasteverywhere.com or phone 906-228-6800.  Great Lakes Radio Stations WFXD 103.3, WKQS 101.9, WRUP 98.3, are Equal Opportunity Employers and encourage minorities and females to apply.

OUTREACH SUMMARY;   Great Lakes Radio personnel attended the 43rd Annual Northern Michigan University Job Fair on October 6, 2010 in Marquette, Michigan. At the noted Job Fair on October 6, 2010, we posted our available position for Sales Executive & Sales Assistant and any other positions that “may” become open in next 6 months. The Great Lakes Radio representatives were able to speak with many students about the option of an intern position or the paid positions available at the time to provide real life experience to a student interested in Marketing or Commercial Broadcast Radio. Kimberly A Poupore send a notice to GLR of NMU thanked GLR for being involved. Jim Gadzinski of NMU also thanked us for registering
Great Lakes Radio personnel also attended the Fall Festival at Northern Michigan University on Monday August 23, 2010 in Marquette, Michigan. This is an opportunity fair for the students returning to NMU for the upcoming semester. Great Lakes Radio was able to talk to many students about broadcasting careers, opportunities within the local area to get involved with broadcasting and answered any questions the students had. Great Lakes Radio collected email addresses and gave away at random a $50 Certificate drawn from the student email addresses. The winner of the $50 Certificate was a local student, Kayla Chiapuz. The email addresses collected were approved to be added to our greater outreach online with the weekly newsletter sent to over 2000 local people including students at NMU, notifying the public of available positions here at Great Lakes Radio and other ways to get involved with broadcasting in Marquette, Michigan.
Great Lakes Radio did take on an intern in her last semester at NMU in the Broadcasting Department. She was eligible for 4 credits through their Broadcasting requirements. Having an intern is a great experience and proves to be beneficial to the Student involved and to the entire company of Great Lakes Radio. Throughout the Semester, our intern helped with data entry systems, learned production rules and goals, sat in on many sales meetings and was even able to join our sales manager on a few client calls. She helped at our front desk doing general office work and was able to learn how about the software programs that power the radio station. We continue also to give tours to the public, local schools and youth groups, local youth sports players, parents and coaches as well as organizations like the Girl and Boy Scouts of America.
GLR took in and hired a local NMU graduate with a non-broadcasting degree as another attempt to diversify those whom we employ at GLR. He entered our industry and worked at GLR, well outside the old boys network, which he hadn't previously considered.
GLR brought in and gave tours with girl scouts, boy scouts, and 4-H kids during the fair, introducing them and exposing them to this industry in a way that they have never considered before, encouraging them to potentially enter a career in broadcasting and to serve the community of license.
Great Lakes Radio continually intends to increase our outreach sources for the future,  including the possibility of additional interns from Broadcasting, Marketing and non-traditional majors from the local Northern Michigan University. We also consider the invitation to our community to give their input on our programming an outreach which may lead to individuals from non-traditional resources or venues. As we continue gathering more effective sources of outreach into our local community, we intend to introduce individuals to Broadcast Radio as an option by their contact with us in these outreach efforts.
